Over-the-bank Sockeye Sales
Under Way Along the Columbia

by Staff
The Columbian, July 2, 2004

Tribal fishermen will sell sockeye salmon along the bank of the Columbia River above Bonneville Dam through July 31.

The Nez Perce, Umatilla, Warm Springs and Yakama tribes started making over-the-bank sales of sockeye on Wednesday. Officials expect the bulk of the fish will come through in the next two weeks.

The closest sales point to Vancouver is a fishing site established less than a mile upriver from Bonneville Dam, just off state Highway 14. Other points include Marine Park in Cascade Locks, Ore.; Lone Pine in The Dalles, Ore.; and Columbia Point the in Tri-Cities.

Biologists predict this year's run of about 115,000 sockeye will be the 10th largest since 1960 and the largest in a decade.

Tribal fishermen plan to harvest about 8,000 sockeye.
