(Times-News photo) Sockeye Adults within their natal spawning grounds of Redfish Lake, Idaho. Sockeye have started showing up in the Sawtooth basin, according to Idaho Fish and Game biologists.

The first returning adult was trapped Tuesday on Redfish Lake Creek and since then 12 more adult fish have completed their 900 mile journey from the Pacific Ocean.

The early arriving fish were taken to Eagle Fish Hatchery said hatchery manager Dan Baker in an email distributed to people involved in the Snake River Sockeye recovery program.

"A majority of the sockeye transferred to Eagle Hatchery will be returned to Redfish Lake and released in early September. The anadromous sockeye not released will be held at Eagle Hatchery for spawning in early October," he wrote.

So far this year, 2,270 adult sockeye have passed Lower Granite Dam, the most ever counted at there, according to Mike Peterson, a senior researcher fisheries biologist for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Snake River sockeye were listed as an endangered species in 1991.
