Idaho Salmon Survive Trip Home by Associated Press KPVI, September 3, 2004

Twenty-two native Idahoans return home-- Twenty-two sockeye salmon have made it back to their central Idaho spawning grounds so far this year.

That's out of 75-thousand young fish sent downriver in 2002. Last year, just three of the endangered fish survived the journey.

A state program funded by the Bonneville Power administration is working to recover two-thousand returning adults. Another 88 have crossed lower granite dam on the lower Snake River, the last obstacle before they reach Idaho.

Federal officials yesterday announced that the hydropower system poses no danger to the fish and none of the lower Snake River dams will be breached. Fish advocates say it's the only way to save the runs.
