Sockeye Count in Sawtooths
Rises to More Than 700

by Rocky Barker
Idaho Statesman, September 1, 2011

Sockeye salmon So far 738 sockeye salmon have returned to Idaho from the Pacific.

The Idaho Department of fish and game captured 380 sockeye in its trap on Redfish Lake Creek since the beginning of July. Another 357 have been caught at the Sawtooth National Hatchery on the Salmon River.

One fish was actually taken at Hells Canyon Dam and shopped directly to the Eagle Hatchery.

Idaho Fish and Game biologists expect more than 1,000 sockeye to make the nearly 900-mile trip from the Pacific to up to the Sawtooth Valley. Only through the captive breeding program run out of the Eagle Hatchery has this generation of sockeye, which migrated to sea in 2008 and recent generations survived.
