Preservation is Our Duty

(Mark Harrison/Seattle Times) Sockeye salmon pass through the Ballard Locks. Sockeye runs have hit historic post-dam-construction highs this summer in the Columbia and Snake rivers Thanks for the recent editorial titled "Sockeye deserve our best fight." Sockeye are among Idaho's most treasured assets and it is our duty to protect them.

The high numbers of sockeye returning to Idaho over Lower Granite Dam this summer are encouraging, and we are likely to see several of Idaho's political officials posing for photographs with fish on the shores of Redfish Lake with a "Mission Accomplished" banner. But let's not get carried away with photo ops and celebration. One improved run does not mean that the salmon crisis has reached a solution.

Rather, we should take advantage of this opportunity to urge the federal government and our elected leaders to implement new sockeye recovery plans that ensure lasting, sustainable runs of fish, unlike the Bush administration's current biological opinion.

Now is the time to take action for Idaho's sockeye salmon. After all, we may not be so lucky in the future to have such high returns.
