Steelhead Forecast Update

by Eric Barker
Lewiston Tribune, September 9, 2010

A group of state, federal and tribal fish managers has updated the prediction for the number of A-run steelhead expected to return to the Columbia River this year.

Known as the Technical Advisory Committee, the group now says 325,000 A-run steelhead will return at least as far as Bonnevile Dam.

That is a slight reduction from the preseason forecast of 337,500.

Although the number of B-run steelhead passing Bonnevile Dam has been a bit lackluster, TAC did not update the B-run forecast that calls for a return of 99,000---slightly more than double last year's return.

So far this year, 40,222 steelhead have been counted passing Lower Granite Dam. The 10-year average is 19,066. I've heard reports that anglers are beginning to catch steelhead on the lower end of the Grand Ronde River. The Snake River, between Lewiston and the mouth of the Ronde has been averaging 65 to 67 degrees.
