Steelhead Fishing Season
Opens on Clearwater River Sunday

by Associated Press
KTVB News, July 30, 2004

The steelhead fishing season on the Clearwater River will open Sunday. LEWISTON -- Anglers, get your tackle boxes ready.

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission is opening the catch-and-keep steelhead season a month early on the mouth of the Clearwater River.

The commission moved the season up so anglers could take advantage of early returning steelhead.

So far this year, about 25-hundred steelhead have crossed the Lower Granite Dam.

Larry Barrett with the Fish and Game Department in Lewiston says the steelhead like the Clearwater because it runs about 15 degrees cooler than the Snake River.

In fact, he says the cool temperatures are so inviting that fish bound for Lyons Ferry swim past their destination and cross Lower Granite to cool off before heading back downstream.
