Columbia River Summer Chinook Run Downsized by Mark Yuasa The Seattle Times, July 4, 2009

Spring chinook forecasts fell on hard times, and now it looks like the summer run is struggling somewhat too.

The Techical Advisory Committe for the Columbia River met this past week, and downgraded the summer chinook run size from the preseason forecast of 70,700 fish to 58,000 fish.

They also looked at the sockeye return, and stayed with the preseason forecast of 183,800.

The group will meet again Monday, July 6.

The results run size review will determine number of remaining harvestable fish by all anglers, and treaty and non-treaty fisheries.

At this point, harvest estimates include 8,500 summer chinook from treaty fisheries, 1,700 (through June 30) from recreational fisheries and 1,800 from commercial fisheries (first 2 openers).

The recreational fishery below Bonneville Dam is scheduled to continue through tomorrow, July 5 for adult chinook retention, and the area above the dam opened July 1 for chinook retention.
