Summer Lock Schedule Set to Begin

Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, May 14, 2008

Dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers move to the new hours until mid-September.

WALLA WALLA -- Thursday marks the start of the summer schedule for boaters using navigation locks on the Columbia and Snake river dams.

The lock schedule is the same for all dams, which are maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The schedule will remain in effect until Sept. 15.

Dams operated by the Corps Walla Walla District are McNary, near Umatilla, Ice Harbor, at Burbank, Lower Monumental, near Kahlotus, Wash., Little Goose, near Starbuck, and Lower Granite, near Pomeroy. Dams operated by the Portland District include John Day, near Rufus, Ore., Bonneville, near Cascade Locks, and The Dalles.

Recreational vessels have precedence during the designated times. At other times, recreational vessels may be allowed to lock through with commercial craft at the discretion of the lockmaster.

All vessel owners and operators lock through at their own risk and must comply with Corps policies. Walla Walla District's recreational vessel lockage schedule, the Corps safety policy and the brochure, "How To Lock Through," are at nww.usace.army.mil. Click on "navigation" under the menu table on the left-hand side of the page.

Flotillas or events sponsored by yacht clubs, marinas and other groups may lock through outside the scheduled times if arrangements are made at least 24 hours in advance with the appropriate location.
