Make Salmon Support Known

by Richard Rivers
Spokesman Review, May 19, 2007

My thanks to the S-R for the editorial supporting HR 1507 ("Facts Over Furor," May 16). This bill directs the National Academy of Sciences to analyze the science of Snake River salmon recovery under different options, including bypass of the lower four dams. It also directs the Government Accountability Office to evaluate the cost/benefits of maintaining the status quo versus dam bypass. Only by such independent analysis can we be reasonably certain of the best route to salmon restoration.

Too many people for too long have embraced emotion over facts on this issue. Only a few years back ex-Congressman Nethercutt crafted legislation to prevent funding any study of the economics of redeveloping a rail transport system between Lewiston and Pasco. Current Congresswoman Cathy McMorris-Rodgers also chooses to reject even requesting such information. We should want the most reliable information possible on what is likely the last chance for Snake River salmon. So call her office (509-353-2374) and ask her to support this important legislation.
