Judge James Redden: 'We Need to
Take Those (Snake River) Dams Down'

by Scott Learn
The Oregonian, April 25, 2012

(Torsten Kjellstrand) U.S. District Court Judge James Redden U.S. District Judge James A. Redden, who presided over the Northwest's biggest salmon lawsuit for nearly a decade, told Idaho Public Television that the Snake River's four hydropower dams should be breached to help wild salmon.

"I think we need to take those dams down," Redden said, adding: "I've never ordered (federal agencies) or even tried to order them that you gotta take those dams down. But I have urged them to do some work on the dams (to improve prospects for salmon), and they have done (so)."

. . .

Redden also said extra spill over dams to help fish is essential, a view often reflected in his rulings during the case. And he praised the work of government scientists, but said "the politics of it makes it difficult" for some of them.
