Forest Thinning Project
Proposed for Redfish

by Greg Moore
Idaho Mountain Express, November 13, 2014

Lodgepole pine killed by mountain pine beetle in the vicinity of Redfish Lake, Idaho The Sawtooth National Forest is proposing a 10-year forest thinning project to reduce fuels near Redfish Lake, south of Stanley.

According to a news release from the U.S. Forest Service, the proposed project would be carried out near high-value areas by vegetation thinning and prescribed burning.

"We intend to work with the local residents, recreationists and other forest users to reduce impacts as we phase in the project over the next 10 years," the Forest Service stated.

The agency said it wants to learn if there are any issues of public concern that need to be addressed in its analysis.

A scoping letter, with a list of proposed treatments and a map, is available at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters north of Ketchum. To be the most helpful, comments should be received by Dec. 10. Electronic comments may be submitted to comments-intermtn-sawtooth-nra@fs.fed.us. Write "Redfish Road 210 Project" in the subject line.
