Toyota Brings Jobs, Money
to Port of Portland

PORTLAND - Toyota is adding 30 new jobs and 15 acres to its terminal at the Port lf Portland.

The company credits skyrocketing sales, increased profits and increased demand for its cars and trucks. At a time when American car-makers are suffering and laying people off, Toyota is ramping up operations to handle its booming business. Besides making cars overseas, Toyota also assembles many vehicles inside the United States.

But whether they're assembled overseas and shipped to ports like Portland, assembled in its plants in the U.S., the process still requires imports, because many of the parts are made in Japan and elsewhere.

To accommodate the volume increase, Toyota signed a five-year lease for an additional 15.28 acres of paved and fenced storage space at Terminal Four. The new property is adjacent to Toyota's existing auto-handling facility.

The Port estimates each car handled at its three auto facilities brings $346 in economic benefits to the region. If Toyota brings in 250,000 autos, that adds up to $86.5 million in annual economic gain to the Portland region
