New BPA Transmission Line in SE Washington

by Associated Press
Seattle Post-Intelligencer, January 19, 2010

TRI-CITIES, Wash. -- The Bonneville Power Administration plans a new transmission line between two substations in southeast Washington to help carry locally generated energy, including wind power, to the grid.

The 40-mile, 500-kilovolt line would connect the existing Lower Monumental Substation south of Kahlotus in Walla Walla County to a planned Central Ferry Substation in Garfield County.

BPA is considering two routes for the transmission line, both of which run south of the Snake River. One would parallel an existing transmission line, but spokesman Doug Johnson says if two lines are built next to each other, a concentrated storm could knock them both offline.

The Tri-City Herald reports construction could begin in the spring of 2011.
