U.S. Seeks Firms for Turbine Linkage Upgrades at 810-MW Lower Granite Hydro Project by Staff HydroWorld, November 7, 2014

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks information on firms able to replace internal turbine hub linkage components at the 810-MW Lower Granite Dam hydroelectric project on the Snake River in Washington. Responses are due Nov. 12.

The Corps' Walla Walla District awarded a contract in 2013 to American Babbitt Bearing Inc. for turbine unit rehabilitation work at Lower Granite and the 402-MW Dworshak project on the North Fork Clearwater River in Idaho. The district plans to seek bids in November for construction of fishway temperature improvement structures at Lower Granite. It also awarded a contract in October to Garco Construction Inc. to upgrade the project's juvenile fish passage facility.

Lower Granite Unit 1 was blocked to be a fixed-blade runner after inspection discovered cracks in the eye end and blade lever link pins. The Corps plans to seek bids to replace internal hub linkage components with government-furnished parts. The turbine is a Kaplan-type manufactured by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton with a generator manufactured by Westinghouse. The work is valued at $5 million to $10 million.

In a sources sought notice, the Corps seeks information on small businesses able to perform the work. Responses are to help it determine the type of solicitation to the issued.
