A new federal study indicates that water quality in the Columbia River estuary is key to salmon recovery, suggesting that dredging a deeper channel for shipping traffic could damage fish runs.

The report by the National Marine Fisheries Service, the federal agency in charge of salmon recovery, says that improving water quality would help save declining salmon and steelhead trout runs because young fish use the lower river to adjust to saltwater on their journey to the ocean.

In fact, improving the estuary would do more to help some Columbia River Basin salmon stocks than removing four federal dams on the lower Snake River, said Will Stelle, regional administrator of the fisheries service.
