Astoria's recent combative stance toward the Columbia River was rewarded Monday night. An emissary from the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission presented the city with a Spirit of the Salmon Public Partnership Award.

The Astoria City Council was recognized for its resolution against deepening the shipping channel of the Columbia River and in favor of the breaching of the Snake River dams.

Quoting the award;s text, Bruce Buckmaster, president of Salmon for All, said, "There is some irony in this award because no matter how we respect one another, the fine citizens of Astoria who love salmon will always be in the geographic position of corking upriver fishermen."
