Minimum Recovery Goals for Wild Salmon is Abysmal by Jennifer Siler The Oregonian, December 10, 2011

I found your editorial on Judge James Redden and Columbia Basin salmon to be a bit odd ("Judge of the river," Dec. 6). The editorial board commends Redden's efforts to uphold the law while painting him as a maverick at the same time. Which one is it? Hard not to be cynical, perhaps, given the state of affairs: years of litigation without a clear end in sight.

The federal government's track record of meeting its own minimum recovery goals for wild salmon is abysmal. Better to stop wasting time on cherry-picked collaboration and agree to an open and honest discussion about all options for restoring wild salmon populations; the very thing the editorial board seems quick to dismiss.

We can't rely on a federal judge for all the answers. Northwest leaders should ensure that communities standing to lose and gain from any decision are included in determining the fate of the Columbia Basin.
