UMATILLA, Ore. - Spillway and powerhouse operations at McNary Dam are causing stronger-than-usual currents in the Columbia River.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers advises boaters to be cautious when using the navigation lock at McNary Lock and Dam.
Traveling upstream, boaters may encounter these flow conditions when approaching the navigation lock in the area at the end of the downstream navigation lock guide wall. This is according to Ann Glassley, a navigation specialist for the Corps' Walla Walla District.
The spill pattern being used at this time includes testing of spill from the Temporary Spillway Weirs.
Beginning tomorrow, water will be released from the spillway in a pattern that should eliminate the strong currents at the end of the guide wall.
Water below dams is subject to dangerous currents, turbulence and whirlpools.
