Chinook Fishing Report 7/6

by Eric Barker
Lewiston Tribune, July 6, 2010

Salmon fishing effort is slipping on the Clearwater and Salmon Rivers. But the anglers who did fish last weekend had some luck.

Only 51 adults and 26 jacks were caught and kept in the Clearwater Basin between June 28 and July 4. Most of those where taken from the South Fork of the Clearwater River.

Catch rates and effort were better on the lower Salmon river. Anglers caught 502 adults and 64 jacks last week. The Park Hole produced 241 adults and 24 jacks.

The tail race of Hells Canyon Dam on the Snake River continued to be the chinook hot spot. Anglers there caught 886 adults and 71 jacks.

The following is a list of river sections and the hours per chinook caught/kept plus the number kept.

CLEAWATER BASIN

Middle Fork Clearwater Kooskia Bridge to Nez Perce Reservation, 14/14 but only 17 fish caught.

South Fork Clearwater, 10/10 with a harvest of 55 adults and jacks.

Lochsa, 68/68, five fish caught.

LOWER SALMON

Rice Creek to Hammer Creek, 10/15, 28 chinook kept.

Hammer Creek to Time Zone, 10/13, 219 kept

Time Zone to Short's Creek, 9/10, 265 kept

Short's Creek to Lake Creek Bridge, 14/15, 29 kept

Lake Creek Bridge to Manning Bridge, 23/23, 19 kept

Manning to Vinegar, 9/9, six kept

SNAKE RIVER, HELLS CANYON DAM

11/11, 957 kept.

There are still lots of summer chinook coming over Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River, but after Wed. only the South Fork of the Salmon, upper Salmon rivers, Middle Fork of the Clearwater, South Fork of the Clearwater and Lochsa rivers will be open. The Imnaha and Wallowa rivers in northeastern Oregon will be open as well.
