Poor Wheat Harvest
Trims Port of Lewiston Revenues

by Statesman wire services
Lewiston Tribune, September 17, 2008

Revenue at the Port of Lewiston is off by $94,000 two months into its fiscal year because of a below-average wheat crop and loss of a connection from the Port of Portland to Taiwan.

The port's container yard generated $46,154 in July and August, compared with the $140,000 forecast in the 2009 fiscal year, said David Doeringsfeld, manager of the Port of Lewiston. "We're quite concerned."

The biggest reason for the loss was a reduction in the amount of wheat moving through the port in containers because of a bad harvest. The port moved 57 containers of wheat in August, compared with 400 last year, Doeringsfeld said.

Yields were down by about 20 percent in north central Idaho, and the quality of the wheat in many cases is such it doesn't meet the specifications of some countries such as Japan, the Philippines and Korea, said Arvid Lyons, manager of the Lewis-Clark Terminal, which warehouses wheat for farmers.
