BILLINGS, Mont. -- An Irish wind energy company says it has raised $18 million to book future space on transmission lines that could be used to export wind power to the West Coast.

Gaelectric vice president Van Jamison said Thursday the money has been deposited with NorthWestern Energy and the Bonneville Power Administration to reserve space on their lines that is expected to become available in the next few years.

Jamison says power generated in Montana could begin flowing on the two companies' lines between 2014 and 2016.

Gaelectric's North American subsidiary is based in Great Falls. It is planning to develop 500 megawatts of wind energy near Belt and 460 megawatts in the Harlowton area.
