Reclassifying Hatchery Fish
Won't Fool Environmentalists

by Parke Burgess
Letters, Seattle Post-Intelligencer - June 14, 2004

The Bush administration guts every environmental regulation in its path, consistently distorts the findings of reputable scientists and reliably employs secrecy and deception to cover its tracks. Given this, how could we doubt even for an instant that the intent of the "reclassification" of hatchery salmon is merely a cynical attempt to circumvent the expenses of dealing with the real problem, which is clear-cutting, agricultural pesticides, industrial and residential runoff and dams exterminating the Northwest's iconic fish species.

I have no doubt that we could synthetically produce millions of fake fish. Somebody could even make a handsome profit in the bargain. But no one should be fooled into thinking that this enterprise has anything to do with protecting an environment any of us would want to live in.
