Yang Ming Lines Arrives this Week

by Staff
The Portland Business Journal, June 12, 2006

The Port of Portland scored a coup when it got not one but two shipping lines to add Portland to their routes after the port lost "K" Line and Hyundai shipping lines last year. This week, it celebrates the accomplishment with the first visit by Yang Ming Lines.

The first Yang Ming vessel calls on Portland's Terminal 6 container facility on Thursday. The debut arrival by the Yang Ming Heights will bring footwear and general merchandise to Portland. It will carry away refrigerated foodstuffs, agricultural commodities, paper and wood products.

Portland is part of Yang Ming's "Y-PNW Loop," which offers fixed weekly calls to Yantian, China, Taiwan and Tacoma as well as Portland. It is expected to move 23,000 containers through the port each year, with a value of more than $700 million.

"Portland is the last port of call before these ships head to Asia, so Yang Ming's new service will not only bring jobs, competitive rates and additional capacity, but they'll offer faster transit times to Korea, Taiwan and China for our supporters," said Sam Ruda, the port's marine director.
