Hapag-Lloyd Makes It Official, No Stops at the Port of Portland by Associated Press Daily Journal, April 7, 2015

PORTLAND, Oregon -- The operator of the Port of Portland's container terminal confirmed that a major shipping line will no longer stop in Portland.

Elvis Ganda is chief executive of ICTSI Oregon, which signed a 25-year lease in 2010 to operate the terminal. He told The Oregonian on Tuesday that Hapag-Lloyd provided notice that it's ending service to Portland.

The announcement was expected after the carrier's schedule showed no upcoming visits. It comes about a month after Hanjin Shipping pulled out of Portland. The two companies comprised nearly all of the port's container business.

Autos, grain and other products are still being shipped into or out of the port.

Ganda says he's trying to attract new lines to the container terminal. The port, however, is at a disadvantage because of labor problems between ICTSI and dockworkers. It's also less convenient than other West Coast ports because it's inland, along the Columbia River.
